SMILE eye surgery is one of the three refractive procedures that we perform at Eye Institute. Essentially, they all work in the same way.
Each of the procedures change the shape of the cornea to refocus your eye.
With SMILE, we use a single laser to create a lenticule within the cornea, which is then removed through a very small incision.
With LASIK, we create a flap to elevate it, lasering the cornea and then removing the tissue.
With PRK, we remove the initial layer on the surface of the eye and then laser the surface.
In all cases, we work to change the curvature of the cornea.
Now, SMILE has some advantages, it’s a really cool operation, but more importantly, this is the laser procedure of the three that tends to result in less dry eye.
This is because incisions are smaller for laser, but we will advise you of the best option for you during your consultation.
