Maintain confidence in your vision

Discover how glaucoma treatment can secure your sight so you can live life – worry-free

Your suitability for glaucoma treatment will largely depend on which type of glaucoma you have. Your doctor will review your medical history and conduct a comprehensive eye examination to determine this.

While glaucoma cannot be ‘cured’, we can control it so that further damage to your eyes is slowed or stopped altogether, preventing blindness.

Treatments generally work by lowering the pressure inside the eye so that no further damage to the optic disc occurs.

Advantages
  • Treatment lowers eye pressure to reduce the risk of further damage to the optic nerve.
Disadvantages
  • If we cannot achieve adequate control with eye drops or laser treatment, you may need surgical intervention.
Risks include:
  • Allergy to eye drops
  • Infection
Eye drops

In many cases, we can control glaucoma using eye drops that reduce the pressure inside the eye. Your specialist will recommend the best one for you based on your condition. Glaucoma management with eye drops requires your commitment because you must use them regularly and continuously to be effective.

Laser treatment

Laser trabeculoplasty is a straightforward procedure, performed under local anaesthetic. We use a gentle laser to encourage the eye’s drainage channels to improve outflow, reducing the pressure inside the eye.

Ongoing treatment

Occasionally, we use surgery to create a new channel to allow fluid to drain out of the eye. Glaucoma surgery is usually very effective, and you may even find that you need no further medications after surgery.

Surgery

It’s important to remember that glaucoma, once diagnosed, will be with you for the rest of your life. While there are many effective treatments available, you must take your treatment as advised, and have regular check-ups.

Our glaucoma specialists have significant glaucoma experience, offering a range of effective treatments that include eye drops, medication, laser treatment and surgery.

Your eye surgeon will create a suitable management plan that will often start with eye drops or laser treatment. If these treatments are not providing a suitable reduction in pressure, we will consider surgery.

Glaucoma treatments can be highly effective at reducing eye pressure. If started early, it can stop or slow the disease process in many cases.
