Dr Elizabeth Insull is a New Zealand and UK trained cataract and oculoplastic surgeon based at Eye Institute Hawke’s Bay at Kaweka Hospital. Liz is also the clinical lead at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and is very involved in training the next generation of eye specialists.  Liz was awarded 2021 ‘Trainer of Excellence’ by trainees in RANZCO’s New Zealand network.

An oculoplastic surgeon is a specialist in the functioning of the eye, the eyelids and the facial tissue regions around the eye. Thus, Liz’s sub-speciality areas include eyelid surgery, lacrimal (tear duct), orbital (eye socket) surgery and cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Liz is a Consultant at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and is involved in Registrar training locally and nationally.

Dr Elizabeth Insull sits on the New Zealand branch executive of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology. She is a member of the Qualification and Education Committee.

Liz is a member of the Australian, New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons (ANZSOPS). Certified ANZSOPS members have unique training in eye surgery and periocular plastic surgery. They have expertise in techniques that address functional and aesthetic results in orbital, lacrimal and eyelid surgery.

Liz graduated in 2006 from the University of Otago with a medical and BSC (Neuroscience) degree. She gained specialist Ophthalmic training in Dunedin and Auckland and subspecialty fellowship experience at The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Family is very important to Liz. She grew up being mentored by her father and grandfather, both Obstetrician and Gynaecologists.

Liz, her husband Francis, and their two daughters love exploring the many running and biking trails around Hawke’s Bay.

Liz has completed the Oxfam 100km challenge with her team in 21 hours and the solo 60Km Kepler Challenge in Fiordland in 8 hours.

Liz made the most of her time using the UK as a travel base to experience Europe. Now she is very content exploring her own backyard.
